He began experimenting by kilning his barley with many different botanicals, finally selecting juniper berries, birch bark and heather flowers, married with a little peat. The result was a batch of spirit with rare aromas of pine needles and juniper, laced with wisps of smoke. It begins with those woody botanical notes, particularly the juniper berries and the hint of peat. But there's also a bright malty note along with vanilla cream. As you taste, the peat smoke stays with you, but it's a secondary note here. The whisky is moderately sweet with honey and orange peel and the finish is bittersweet and lightly peated. Would maybe like the finish to stay a bit longer, but overall it's a fairly balanced dram.
